“Abound More and More“ (1 Thess 3:6-4:1)

“And the Lord make you to increase and abound in love one toward another, and toward all, even as we do toward you…Furthermore then we beseech you, brethren, and exhort you by the Lord Jesus, that as you have received of us how you ought to walk and to please God, so you would abound more and more” (1 Thess 3:12, 4:1).

The honor of the ministry is helping others; it is joy for every child of God to serve in the kingdom. We give ourselves that others may believe unto the end, not merely PREACHING the gospel but discipling, praying for, and caring for saints until they make it home.  Stories of “evangelists” who love preaching but not people, so they were called to “evangelism” rather than pastoring, are wrong.  All biblical preaching has a love for God and man, expressed in desire to see people persevere. We do what we can to help in prayer, support, preaching, and example. We live that they know God until they leave this world for glory, having conquered Satan and endured to the end - “To the end he may establish your hearts unblamable in holiness before God, even our Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ with all his saints“(1 Thess 3:13).

The gospel is FRUIT producing - producing men and women that seek Christ’s fruit in others, not satisfied with ourselves, but desiring to see others make it too - “Night and day praying exceedingly that we might see your face, and might perfect that which is lacking in your faith“ (1 Thess 3:10).  This is love, and this is the cup that we’re to drink, the fountain of life: not only chosen, but CHOSEN to serve people with the gospel, enduringly and perseveringly, loving to the cost of ourselves that others may live - “And he said, The God of our fathers has chosen you, that you should know his will, and see that Just One, and should hear the voice of his mouth.  For you shall be His witness unto all men of what you have seen and heard“ (Acts 22:14-15).  This spirit of Christ is in the believer.  Let it arise. Let the new man free to live.

John G. Paton, commenting on his father’s influence in his life, which brought him to Christ and then the mission field of New Hebride Islands, wrote, “The "closet" was a very small apartment betwixt the other two, having room only for a bed, a little table and a chair, with a diminutive window shedding diminutive light on the scene. This was the Sanctuary of that cottage home. Thither daily, and oftentimes a day, generally after each meal, we saw our father retire, and "shut to the door"; and we children got to understand by a sort of spiritual instinct (for the thing was too sacred to be talked about) that prayers were being poured out there for us, as of old by the High Priest within the veil in the Most Holy Place. We occasionally heard the pathetic echoes of a trembling voice pleading as if for life, and we learned to slip out and in past that door on tiptoe, not to disturb the holy colloquy… Though everything else in religion were by some unthinkable catastrophe to be swept out of memory, or blotted from my understanding, my soul would wander back to those early scenes, and shut itself up once again in that Sanctuary Closet, and, hearing still the echoes of those cries to God, would hurl back all doubt with the victorious appeal, "He walked with God, why may not I?"

You too are created to manifest God, to be like Him, to love.  Be who you are and devote yourself to riches eternal, salvation of sinners, and the higher things of life - “Now God himself and our Father, and our Lord Jesus Christ, direct our way unto you“ (1 Thess 3:11).  Distractions are every where, and the Lord is our power to inch by inch, movement upward by movement upward, glorify the God of glory by living like His Son, to save sinners, honor His name, and do good to people because God is great to us.

“Every Good Work” (Col 1:10)

“For this cause we also, since the day we heard [of your love in the Spirit], do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that you might be filled with knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; that you might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work; and increasing in the knowledge of God” (vs9-10).

Not “some” good works but every good work, so that God commands us to grow in every aspect of life: we aren’t to say, “I’m ok over here”, and refuse to grow over there. Instead, every area the gospel touches, trust the Son of God to pardon and cleanse. Shut no doors, for in shut doors, you’ll find terrible loss in your life. Change everything about you continually and tolerate none of Adam’s ways within.

I preached the gospel and the word of God brought conviction to me as I lay in bed that night, that I cannot lust and allow myself to indulge the thoughts of my brain; I have a higher calling.  I’m not to preach and say, “OK, I’ve done my job, so I get a break”, but I’m to abound in all works of grace continually, for my own good. God’s will is my pleasure, so let me get to obeying and honoring God, so that Christ be glorified, others helped, and I might be happy. Let us FIGHT with and WAR with sin, putting it off continually - “But put you on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill the lusts thereof“ (Rom 13:14).

Don’t say that any of your faults are unnoticeable and ok. I saw myself preaching on TV, and what a painful thing it is. Let me see MORE love the next time, more humility, and let me not get fat and say, “My doctrine is right, and I know more than others, so it is ok if I’m mean or cruel, hard or course”. None of this is GOD’S way; His way is fruitfulness and change, and He is where people obey Him - “And we are his witnesses of [Christ‘s exaltation]; and so is also the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to them that obey him“ (Acts 5:32).

People say, “I want God”, but you’d have God, if you took change seriously.  If you wanted to obey God, He’d help you do the deed. But, if you want happiness only, you can get that from pornography or fornication for a season… you can get it from family and friends… hobbies and work… and you can have a FALSE happiness that isn’t peaceful. But, if you want joy in Christ, then grow, yield fruit, and obey. The hymn writer said wisely, “Trust and obey, for there‘s no other way, to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey“.

Believe He loves you enough to change you, and be changed. This is God’s will for you, and you’ll find PEACE no other place!

Authority and Progressive Sanctification

“I Command You” (Acts 16:18)

“But Paul, being grieved, turned and said to the spirit, I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And he came out the same hour” (vs18).

Authority is from Jesus the Lord. He is the preacher’s right to command; it is not in my name or piety, but it is in the name of Jesus Christ, by His resurrection power and authority, that I command you to believe God, because He has CROWN rights over you, having ascended God’s right hand, victorious in saving strength, having cast out Satan by REMITTING the sins of His church.

Resist Him no longer.  He will love you home to heaven, or He will damn you forever in hell.  He will bless you, or you and I must live OUTSIDE of God forever.

Believe the gospel of Christ, and don’t hesitate or yield to Satan; believe and live.
Progressive Sanctification (John 17:17)

“Sanctify them through your truth: your word is truth” (vs17)

We GROW in sanctification; it is not like justification. Justification is once and for all times, righteous before God by faith in Jesus’ blood.  Sanctification is immediate, but we grow in it. I do not become MORE righteous before God, but I do grow in faith, hope, love, holiness.  My PERFECTION in Christ cannot improve, but my love and character grow, by the word.  Therefore, it is imperative to GROW by the gospel, and knowing this is how we grow, we seek the word, and He feeds us, causing us to desire and also be helped by what we hear.

Thank God for the gospel by using it in your life to be a BETTER person and more FRUITFUL believer. Honor Him more.
