He Will Break in Pieces the Oppressor (Ps 72)

Give the king Your judgments, O God, and Your righteousness to the king’s Son. He will judge Your people with righteousness, and Your poor with justice. The mountains will bring peace to the people, and the little hills, by righteousness. He will bring justice to the poor of the people; He will save the children of the needy, and will break in pieces the oppressor.(vs1-4)

Jesus Christ is King of kings and Lord of lords, having power to destroy our enemy Satan and power to overcome his traps and snares (vs1-4). We read, “He will save the children of the needy, and will break in pieces the oppressor”. He can save us because He rose from the dead victorious over sin and death, paying the penalty, and walking obediently on our behalf. He may give conquering grace because He conquered Satan in this world as a Man, come down, tempted in all points, and yet without sin, “For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin” (Heb 4:15).

As the creating God, He has power over everything to do as He pleases, but He could ONLY save by becoming Man for us, taking our sins, and earning the grace that we shall receive, “so that as sin reigned in death, even so grace might reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Rom 5:21). Therefore, by Him, we shall do marvelously and shall overcome the traps and troubles of sin. The Lord is the reason that we'll succeed, so when oppression seems hard to handle and the way is too hard for your flesh, remember, Jesus shall subdue our lusts, give us worship, and keep us persevering. Never believe anything depends on you or starts with you, and get grace through Jesus from God.

Secondly, Christ has an everlasting kingdom without end (vs5-11). He says, “They shall fear You as long as the sun and moon endure, throughout all generations... In His days the righteous shall flourish, and abundance of peace, until the moon is no more.” There will never be a generation wherein He lacks power. It doesn't matter the sin of man or the evil of society; the Lord of glory, Jesus Christ, has power to save and do His will. He can keep His saints, call His elect, and glorify us with salvation. He can and will do all of His pleasure until the end of time, for nothing is able to stop Him. It says, “Declaring the end from the beginning, and from the ancient time things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all My pleasure” (Is 46:10). He has all power in His hands by virtue of the cross, whereby He gives eternal life to whom the Father wills (John 17:3). He is not impotent and historic, some past tense god, who cannot save in modern times, standing helpless before men. He is the great Savior, the One who does His pleasure, the One we may securely lean on forever, and to the end.

Indeed, His kingdom and dominion extend to every corner of the earth (vs12-20)! He says, “His name shall endure forever; His name shall continue as long as the sun. And men shall be blessed in Him; all nations shall call Him blessed”. Bless His name. Missionaries go forth with the gospel, going into territory that He owns, places where knees will surrender. Every knee shall bow to Him and every tongue confess His glory, and out of every nation, kindred, and language, there shall be a people who adore Him. Revelations 5:9 says, “You are worthy to take the scroll, and to open its seals; for You were slain, and have redeemed us to God by Your blood out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation”.

His power isn't limited to this region or that, this century or that, but His power, from God, extends over all the creation forever and ever. You aren't following a loser or helpless king, some paper warrior with no snap to his punches. You're fighting with the Lord or glory, the mighty King, and the One who rules it all. Be confident. You may lose in the eyes of men, because you're poor and unnoticed. Perhaps you're rejected, must sleep alone, and must walk alone much of the time. It may be hard to find anyone around who believes. Yet, you are not a foolish loser, someone serving a helpless do nothing. Your kingdom is not of this world, your victory is certain, and you walk as a son of God, rather than some mere nobody, as you may appear. Gal 3:26 says, “For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus”.

Reality is very different from sight! The mighty of this world think themselves grand, rejecting Christ to make their own kingdoms. But, in the midst of His foes, He is ruling, giving grace to many, and exercising His will continually. There has never been a single prayer of God's elect, according to His will, that's been unanswered. There's NEVER been an oppressed sinner who called out to Him, who wasn't saved. The Lord, contrary to the opinions of men and the lusts of the flesh, is always winning and giving salvation to us.

Be encouraged in the King. His power, goodness, and salvation are here to comfort us and make us rejoice. His everlasting kingdom, which you're in, is good, safe, and satisfying. He is the only One worthy of worship, and He will have it, from everybody soon, and from His elect, as He saves us from this world.
