“He Has Done This” (Ps 22:1-31)

“A posterity shall serve Him. It will be recounted of the Lord to the next generation, they will come and declare His righteousness to a people who will be born, that He has done this” (vs30-31)

In the Son of God, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, God has accomplished great things, even saving us from sin by the sacrifice of Himself. He honored God amidst the punishment of our sins, taking our place, submissively.

He accomplished redemption by His death in our place (vs1-21). What we deserve, He suffered, enduring God's wrath faithfully, until the end. He said, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me? Why are you so far from helping Me, and from the words of My groaning?”

He had no hope but God, but amidst the hardest trial of eternity, He bore up by faith. He said, “But You are holy, enthroned in the praises of Israel. Our fathers trusted in You; they trusted, and You delivered them. They cried to You, and were delivered; they trusted in You, and were not ashamed”. He, like we, learned obedience by what He suffered, submitting Himself to God's goodness amidst the horror of wrath. He said, “But You are He who took Me out of the womb; You made Me trust while on My mother's breasts. I was cast upon You from birth. From My mother's womb You have been My God”. He looked to the promises, while He confessed the pain. He believed IN SPITE OF the torments of death, and He succeeded thereby, making atonement for sins.

Secondly, there is a reward: He was heard, so we, like Him, are saved (vs21-29). He says, “You have answered Me. I will declare Your name to My brethren; in the midst of the assembly I will praise You. You who fear the Lord, praise Him! All you descendants of Jacob, glorify Him, and fear Him, all you offspring of Israel”.

We did nothing. We are the sinners who shot out the lip against Him, the thief who mocked Him, and we are the CAUSE of His pain. Yet He, in love indescribable endured this, so that we might feast upon Him, drinking of His blood, eating His flesh, and benefiting from the sacrifice He made. We read, “The poor shall eat and be satisfied; those who seek Him will praise the Lord. Let your heart live forever!” He gave Himself to us and for us, so that we could be reconciled to God and enjoy the benefits eternally. His hope wasn't merely Himself, but His people, even as a parent sacrifices for the welfare of the children. He did this in love, and love saw Him successfully saving His people to the end of time, and He rejoiced.

Thirdly, are you in the elect multitude (vs30-31)? The Son of God redeemed God's people at Calvary, paying our price completely, but the Son did this for those who SERVE Him. He says, “A posterity (offspring) shall serve Him. It will be recounted of the Lord to the next generation. They will come and declare His righteousness to a people who will be born, that He has done this”. Are you in this number? Do you receive the atonement by faith?

Don't deceive yourself as if Christ's work has delivered you FROM loving Him, so that you can live in sin. Christ is recognized by those who benefit from His salvation. We honor Him for what He's done.

Finally, praise the Lord openly, even as He openly confesses God. He says, “declare His righteousness to a people who will be born, that He has done this”.
