Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way which He consecrated for us, through the veil, that is, His flesh, and having a High Priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. (vs19-22)
First, we draw near to God as clean people and new creations, accepted for the privileges of service and fellowship (Heb 10:19-23). We draw near to be received and blessed with the blessings that God gives to His sons, those He approves of. Don't be unworthy any longer. Christ has died and washed you by His word. He has cleansed you by faith, so that God may serve you with grace, so that you and I may serve our neighbor.
Secondly, don't grow cold and indifferent, but as Judgment Day nears, get more zealous and faithful. Prepare yourself by helping others (vs24-25). We read, “not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching”.
Go to God as accepted, so that you can live acceptably. Heavenly faith is the key to spiritual life on earth. Good works come from being pleasing to God faith, and using this access to draw near for promises and rewards.
Thirdly, if we draw back, there's hell to pay (vs26-31). We read, “Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, and insulted the Spirit of grace? For we know Him who said, 'Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,' says the Lord. And again, 'The LORD will judge His people.' It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.”. Those who rejected the law, after all they'd seen, were punished. It shall be much worse for all who reject God's Son in the gospel. It has been said, “Hell has no fury like a woman scorned”, but in reality, “Hell's fury is God scorned”, men who've rejected the Son.
Press on, lest you die, squandering eternal life and provoking wrath, which will surely come.
Finally, though we temporarily suffer the hatred and rejection of men, faith in Christ has a heavenly reward, assuredly coming (vs32-39). We read, “Therefore do not cast away your confidence, which has great reward. For you have need of endurance, so that after you have done the will of God, you may receive the promise: for yet a little while, and He who is coming will come and will not delay”.
You're despised like Jesus was, and you'll share His reward. Be patient. The laborer waits until pay day, knowing it is worth his time to work now and enjoy later.
