Behold, bless the Lord,
All you servants of the Lord,
Who by night stand in the house of the Lord!
2 Lift up your hands in the sanctuary,
And bless the Lord.
Who by night stand in the house of the Lord!
2 Lift up your hands in the sanctuary,
And bless the Lord.
3 The Lord who made heaven and earth
Bless you from Zion!
Bless you from Zion!
We bless the Lord
because He blesses us. He uses His
goodness and power to save us from sin, and He rules the world for our
exaltation. We rejoice before Him heartily, desiring His exaltation, and
kissing the Hand that feeds us.
We bless Him for who
He is, and we bless Him in the night seasons, when few are around to see. He says, “Behold, bless the Lord all you servants
of the Lord, who by night stand in the house of the Lord!” In the temple, they served God day and night,
but in the night less was noticed and fewer attended. Yet, the priests are not to be slack in their
service because they aren’t popular; they are to be diligent, blessing the
Lord, doing their service from the heart. Men may not notice. You may teach a small
Sunday School class. You may be a single mother, bringing your children to the
gospel, or you may be an unnoticed church, laboring, but not prospering in
numbers. It doesn’t matter! Bless the Lord with your heart and devote
yourself to His honor. He is worthy of
your devotion, even if no one sees. Give
Him the best that you have.
Secondly, bless the
Lord by faith, believing the gospel, and receiving from Him. Bless Him in the dark seasons of fear and
doubt by believing, honoring Him with submission, and by knowing that He does
best and cannot fail or do unwisely. Yield
to His goodness, even His hurting hand, and bless the Lord for His care,
because in love He afflicts us.
Thirdly, bless the
Lord because He commands it, and it is SURELY the best thing for you. If you’re blessing Him, then you’re thinking
upon what you have in Christ, and He will bless you inwardly. He says, “Finally, brethren, whatever things
are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things
are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if
there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy – meditate on these things. The things which you learned and received and
heard and saw in me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you” (Phil
4:8-9). We bless the Lord and get a
blessing, as we admire His beauty, conspire to live to His will, and rejoice in
His salvation.
