“Rule in the Midst of Your Enemies” (Ps 110)

A Psalm of David. The LORD said to my Lord, "Sit at My right hand, till I make Your enemies Your footstool." The LORD shall send the rod of Your strength out of Zion. Rule in the midst of Your enemies! (vs1-2)

Jesus is the triumphant King of kings, ruling in the midst of His foes, doing as He pleases. He is the One who honored God on earth, laying down His life to redeem God's chosen from our sins. David says, “The Lord (God the Father) shall send the rod of Your strength out of Zion. Rule in the midst of Your enemies” (vs2). He is the Eternal Priest by whom we always have access to God, the One whose mediation never loses its power. Hebrews 7 says, “Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them”. His people, called by the Spirit, worship Him now in the beauties of holiness. We trust His blood to make us like Him, to make us able to submit and do His will. This GLORIOUS Christ, this King, is the triumphant One, presently reigning over all, and you are saved by entrusting yourself to Him.

Bless the Lord! Our Champion did not fail, and Christ assures our success by continually giving us the grace that He has earned. He says, “The Lord has sworn and will not relent, You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek” (vs4). We are more sinful than we expected and worthy of wrath, but His grace never loses power, His blood continually cleanses, and the Spirit assists us for His name's sake, giving us the holiness that we need. He suffered and died for us under the curse, but now He reigns, exalted to the Father's right hand. He does as He pleases, and He is our hope for mankind, not that sinners are good enough to trust Him, but that sinners chosen of God cannot resist the overwhelming power of the gospel, as the Spirit illuminates and shows us the triumph of Christ. By this, we WILLINGLY bow, volunteering ourselves to Him.

This willing heart is rewarded, not because we can do what we desire, but because He is able, and we trust Him for the strength to love, as He has loved us. He says, “Your people shall be volunteers in the day of Your power; in the beauties of holiness, from the womb of the morning (all day everyday), You have the dew of Your youth (the power to save)” (vs3). We see constant pardon, power from on high, and we say, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Phil 4:13). He changes us from proud, selfish, and hateful, into merciful, compassionate, sincere, and kind. This BEAUTIFUL work of God is in us - “the beauties of holiness” - is Christ's work from His throne on high!

Bless God. We have learned what all the world will soon see, that He reigns. He says, “The Lord is at Your right hand; He shall execute kings in the day of His wrath. He shall judge among the nations, He shall fill the places with dead bodies, He shall execute the heads of many countries” (vs5-6). Kings will bow to Him, rebellious sinners will bend the knee, eventually, and God will give Him the neck of His foes. He says, “He shall drink of the brook by the wayside (victoriously); therefore He shall lift up the head (in absolute triumph)” (vs7). Don't resist the Irresistible Sovereign, but bend the knee now. Acknowledge Him able to save you from the wrath that you deserve.
