It is blessedness beyond description that we are one with Christ, more so than husband and wife:
“And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man. Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh” (Gen 2:23-24).
The Lord Jesus is the Head and Husband of the church, giving Himself for us. Adam's wife came from his side just as the Lord's church came from His wounds on the cross and the life He laid down - “And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof; and the rib, which the Lord God had taken from man, built He a woman, and brought her unto the man” (Gen 2:21-22), “But when they came to Jesus, and saw that He was dead already, they broke not His legs: but one of the soldiers with a spear pierced His side, and immediately blood and water came out” (John 19:33-34).
We are brought forth from His side to show that we help Him and are joint-heirs of the inheritance. He earned every thing, but by union, it is given to us and enjoyed. We get the MANY blessings of everlasting life FREELY, and we live for the cause of Christ, exalting Him, and finding fulfillment in His will - “Then the LORD God said, 'It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him'” (Gen 2:18).
Just as the church is subject to Christ, let the wives be to their own husbands. You are a helper, created by God to assist your husband in the service of Christ. And, if he doesn't obey the word, then help him by your own meek submission (1 Pet 3:1-7).
The gospel deals with Jesus Christ, and it touches every aspect of human behavior spoken of in scripture. But, it is only as we see Christ that the demand to honor Christ is fulfilled. If I see that I am BLESSED by Him, how He SUFFERED for me, and how my own happiness is His will, then I can serve Him. And, that's why Christ must be preached.
Marriage without Christ is damnation waiting to happen.
