Me First: Sundays Are For Me (Donnie Bell, TN)

I saw a young woman sitting reading a religious book the other day, so I asked her if she attended services anywhere. She told me that she was a member of a certain church in town but that she hadn’t been in a while. She proceeded to tell me why, even though I didn’t ask. Her reasons for not going to “church” was; “I go to school, and I work all the time, Sundays are the only time I have for my activities”. Then she added “I know I need to get back in church”. This is typical of a multitude, Sundays are for ME! No thoughts of worship, of enjoying the Gospel or of seeing the brethren. Only thoughts of self, what self needs, what self wants.

“Me First”, is a character in the scriptures; Our Lord said to some, “Follow Me”. The man replied, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father. Christ said to him; “let the dead bury the dead. Another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house. And Jesus said unto him, “No man having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God”. (Lu. 9:57-62).

But Sundays for the Lords sheep are special, they get a respite from the world. The worship services, the gospel are necessities for their souls. Instead of me first, it is Christ, I must have food for my soul, I need a refuge from the world, from myself if only for and hour or two. If The Lord in his providence keeps them from a worship service or two, they get a longing in their soul, oh, how they miss being in the services. It is obvious if Christ is a soul’s life, or if it is Me First. You may not know it but God does. Are you keeping Sundays for your Soul or your Self?
