“For this is the word of promise, At this time will I come, and Sarah shall have a son” (vs9).
When God does what God has promised, salvation comes. Faith RECEIVES the promise, but salvation is God’s power DEMONSTRATED to the human soul. He saves us without our contribution. It is done for us. Not only was Abraham justified by faith, but he received promises of fruitfulness too, for “Sarah shall have a son“.
Many have a god of the flesh, and they can’t do miraculous things. They don’t BELIEVE the goodness of God, so they minimize the gospel to say less than He says. They can’t see how God can be holy and yet we be holy, too. They can’t see how cleansing comes, so rather than believe, they don’t experience the miracle - “Well then, has God failed to fulfill his promise to Israel? No, for not all who are born into the nation of Israel are truly members of God’s people!(Rom 9:6)
The believer, though weak as dust, still believes the promise of the unfailing God, and believing, the promise is fulfilled in us - “This means that Abraham’s physical descendants are not necessarily children of God. Only the children of the promise are considered to be Abraham’s children” (Rom 9:8).
[Abraham had many sons, but “in Isaac shall your seed be called” (vs7). Isaac had Jacob and Esau, but “As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated” (Rom 9:13). So, you get no leg up because you’re of Abraham’s seed by the flesh, only by the Spirit, both Jew and Gentile.
The children of promise LOVE. Love is the fulfilling of the law and the fruit of Christ - “For I could wish that myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh“ (Rom 9:3). We are assured of His love, so we love others as the automatic and commanded response - “And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord“ (Rom 8:38-39). A human gospel gives man the glory; it denies God’s glory in holiness. A God-given miraculous gospel is ALL of grace, and it produces life where there was death, love in the place of hate, and obedience where rebellion reigned - " (for the children not yet being born, nor having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works but of Him who calls), it was said to her, "The older shall serve the younger (Rom 9:11)."
God must save you. Has He? If you believe, then you have the salvation that He gives. If you deny the gospel, then you’re of the flesh, not of promise, and rejection is on you, “As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated” (Rom 9:13).
Israel rejected the gospel because they had no need. Do you? Israel had the promises, but they didn’t have the promise of salvation that was contingent upon God meeting all requirements for you (Rom 9:4, 9).
If you believe, you’re a child of promise. He promised you eternal life, not based on any contribution you can make. He will keep His promise to the end, for “we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us” (Rom 8:37).
